Your foal is here! This is an exciting time, but don’t forget to register your baby.
A registered horse is essentially verified by the organization and age-verified for his future career in sport, so don’t miss this important step.
Registering your foal also has other benefits, including making him eligible for awards. It provides clarity and credibility to potential buyers should you choose to sell this horse in the future. In addition, keeping track of offspring helps breeders and organizations build a database of inspection and show results. This information is invaluable for breeders, as well as buyers.

We report all breedings with cooled semen and frozen semen breeding contracts to the KWPN-NA and FHANA at the time of breeding. (If you have bred with frozen semen purchased by the dose, it’s up to you to report the breeding to the organization.) This information needs to be on file with the KWPN-NA and FHANA in order to register your foal.
Registering your foal is simple. If you’re a current member of the KWPN-NA or FHANA, begin by logging in to your account. From there, follow the prompts to foal registration.
KWPN-NA
Once you’re in your membership portal, register your foal and pay the fee. Fees increase with your horse’s age, but you can save $50 per foal by registering them within 60 days of their birth. Another bonus for foals registered by 12/31 of their birth year is a lifetime USEF horse registration number, which is up to a $300 value.
Once you’ve registered your foal, you will receive a form via email that you will print out and send with your foal’s DNA sample to the University of California Davis. You will also receive a microchip that’s included with the registration fee. Once the microchip has been implanted and the KWPN-NA receives the affidavit, your foal’s registration papers will be sent to you. You can read about the process at the KWPN-NA website.
In 2023, KWPN-NA names begin with the letter T.
FHANA
Once you have logged in to your account, follow the prompt for foal registration. You can watch a step-by-step video about the process. Once you’ve completed the forms, you will receive a DNA and microchip kit in the mail. You must complete both steps prior to attending an inspection. DNA testing takes approximately 4-6 weeks, so be sure to account for that time.
In 2023, FHANA names begin with the letters W, X, Y, and Z.
Congratulations on registering your new foal! Don’t forget to send us foal photos and tag us in your social media posts. We love to follow along on your journey.
